Our employability courses and study programmes offer support to people who wish to enhance their skills, confidence and qualifications to prepare them for the world of work.
Prepare to Work & Study
Portsmouth College are offering a wide range of FREE employability courses across Portsmouth and Hampshire that support people to either gain sustainable employment, change their career, or progress into Further Education, Higher Education or an Apprenticeship.
Courses are free for people who are unemployed and in receipt of universal credit, or who are employed, or self-employed, and earning less than £17,004.00 annual gross salary (evidence must be present during enrolment). Courses can also be used to support the Government Scheme Kickstart and Job Centre recommended programmes.
Together we will discuss your experience and interests to match you with the most appropriate course enabling you to find suitable employment or progression within your chosen sector.

Portsmouth College are now offering prepare to work courses working with the unemployed, these courses will not only support those with low self esteem & confidence but those who have been long term and recently unemployed, parents looking to return to work, those in receipt of low wage, as well as assisting the over 45 age bracket. The courses allow the client to consider their next steps into employment and consider career progression opportunities and career changes helping them in their journey. Clients will complete both the GROW (Get Ready to Work Opportunities) and SEED (Skill Enhancement & Employment Development) courses during which their individual learning plan will be discussed to be able to support them with their next steps.
GROW: Get Ready for Work Opportunities
To support those with low confidence and self-esteem, supporting them whilst they are encouraged to make small changes to their lifestyles and helping them to feel more positive about themselves.
SEED: Skill Enhancement & Employment Development
To support those who are considering career changes, either through redundancy or wanting to begin their journey in a different industry, looking to return to work, long term unemployment and the recently unemployed. Encouraging self assessment and development and recognising opportunities for employment whilst overcoming any personal barriers to work. A variety of pathways are available based on individual needs.
Leading into: Following clients individual learning plan.
Follow on courses to further support the client include:
- Early Years for those who wish to work in Nurseries/Childcare
- Support Work in Schools for those who wish to work with children from the age of five and up
- A range of mental health courses supporting those who wish to work with Aspergers, autism etc
- Care courses that include, dementia care, end of life care and care planning
- Food Hygiene Certificate, Customer Service, Team Leading & Retail Operations Courses helping those in the retail sector gain qualifications
- Business Administration helping clients to gain knowledge and understanding of this sector
- Exercise Health & Nutrition supporting health, exercise & wellbeing.
Potential add-ons: IT Essentials – basic skills and up
Functional Skills: English, Maths, ICT
Construction Employability Courses
Our CTC (Complete to Construct) course is suited to those wishing to work in the construction industry.
This is an opportunity for clients to gain various recognised construction qualifications unique to Portsmouth College. Working closely with an established provider clients will follow employability courses to update their skills and then be offered the opportunity to achieve qualifications such as CSCS, IPAF, PASMA, Banksman, Fire Warden etc at no cost to them so long as they are in receipt of benefits.
Example of a pathway:
GROW (Prepare to work) Course ⇒ SEED (Prepare to work) Course ⇒ PASMA ⇒ Complete the CSCS Course
There are a variety of options available but all are dependent on cost and numbers and all clients are required to complete employability courses prior to the construction courses with and full attendance is required on all courses to enable the client to progress.
Clients will also need to have the relevant PPE prior to commencing these courses and Portsmouth College may be able to offer some support to you with this – please discuss with your tutor.
