Another year of success despite ‘unique’ circumstances for the Class of 2020Published on: August 13, 2020
SUMMARY OF STATISTICS
97.4% Pass rate*
49.3% High Grade Achievement (A* – B and Distinction Star/Distinction Grades)*
Despite a particularly difficult year for students and staff across the UK, here at Portsmouth College we are celebrating another set of strong A Level and Level 3 vocational results. 97.4% of students have passed their qualifications* (97% in 18/19) and 49.3% achieved the highest grades of A*-B at A Level and Distinction Star/Distinction on Level 3 Vocational Programmes* (49% in 18/19).
Principal, Simon Barrable shared his admiration:
I am extremely proud of all our Portsmouth College students and staff for the results which have been achieved today. I’m even more proud of the way the College community have pulled together through these very difficult times to support one another and our local community. We will continue to offer that high level of support to all our leavers over the next days and weeks as they secure their next steps in a difficult landscape.”
Chair of Governors Nick Wynne commented on the unusual grading process:
This has been a unique ‘exam’ season for our staff and students this year. The College worked extremely hard to try to get students the grades they deserved in an untried or tested system. The hard work has paid off as a three year upward trend in results has continued. Some students have inevitably lost out because of the national system for awarding grades. We will do all we can to help them appeal results we feel are unfair and to secure their next steps.”

The College continues to grow in popularity due to its success in supporting students across a breadth of A Level and Vocational subjects. We are proud to be the city’s only Sixth Form College supporting Portsmouth pupils to study A Levels, vocational courses or a combination of both. We are increasingly welcoming students from a broad travel to learn area beyond Portsmouth due to our popularity and success. The continued improvements in both our pass and high grade achievement this year will continue this trend.
