PLEASE NOTE: This is a pathway that goes alongside BTEC Level 3 Uniformed Public Services.
This pathway is designed for those wishing to work in outdoor centres and includes training and qualifications that enable you to earn money in this sector straight away. There will be opportunities to volunteer and eventually work for local outdoor centres, as well as centres abroad.
The year long course will consist of gaining qualifications in Sailing (Level 1, 2 and 3), Powerboating (Level 1 and 2), Seamanship Skills, first aid qualification, and a Dinghy Instructor course to enable you to teach others. These watersport qualifications are accepted worldwide, enhancing opportunities to work abroad. As well as certificates for each qualification achieved, other transferable skills gained from the course include communication, teamwork, leadership, and confidence building. Other opportunities are available at the centre and include paddleboarding, kayaking and windsurfing.
An interest in various watersports, including sailing and power boating, is desirable. You must also be committed to volunteering in a sport and leisure setting.
Practical assessments will run throughout the year and will be observed by your instructors. This will include RYA (Royal Yacht Association) Level 1 & 2 in Sailing and Level 1 & 2 in Powerboating, as well as First Aid. Students will then be required to do a week long assessment for the Dinghy Instructor (DI) course.
All of the qualifications on this course are recognised worldwide.
Opportunities that can arise from this course include potential employment at local sailing establishments as well as sailing establishments abroad, due to the qualifications gained being recognised worldwide. This course goes hand in hand with the College’s E6 Programme – particularly the E6 ‘Exercise’ strand – as students can potentially choose a sport/exercise option.
These qualifications will enable you to apply for a foundation degree concerning sport, when combined with other qualifications. Alternatively, you can progress onto a second year at College to achieve a Diploma or Extended Diploma in Sport, which will gain you access into a full degree course, or into an apprenticeship/job in the sporting sector. The course is diverse enough to develop you towards careers in watersports, sport or leisure centres.
Attendance is essential for this course due to the nature of each aspect and qualification. June 2019 will be vital for the Dinghy Instructor week-long course.
