• Foundation Diploma (1 year, equivalent to one-and-a-half A levels)
• Extended Diploma (2 years, equivalent to 3 A levels)
This course is football focused and is integrated into our successful Portsmouth College Football Academy, which has won competitions both locally and abroad. Learning and assessment are threaded into excellent coaching sessions with UEFA B licenced coaches, aiming to develop your technical ability.
Students enrolling on this course must have recent playing experience at club level. Players currently not in a club will be considered and allocated a playing shirt based on their performance at pre-season trials. Students must have achieved five GCSEs or equivalent, ideally to include a grade 5 or above in Physical Education and a grade 4 in Mathematics and English.
As an international student you must:
There are a number of units that will enhance your understanding as a developing footballer. Units such as Sports Psychology will help you prepare for matches as well as understand how your temperament may change during a match. The Sports Nutrition unit will give you an insight as to how you can prepare your body through your diet, and the Anatomy and Physiology unit will underpin your knowledge in areas such as weight training, bio-mechanics and dealing with injuries. Students have access to an excellent gym facility, and the numerous AstroTurf pitches at the onsite Goals Centre.
You will be able to study one extra subject alongside a Foundation Diploma or two alongside an Extended Certificate. Alternatively, this space may be used to retake a GCSE such as Maths.
You will learn about a range of topics within sport such as psychology, anatomy & physiology, and fitness testing. Alongside the lessons, you will have high-quality football training sessions to develop your ability, as well as the opportunity to work with personal trainers to improve your physical attributes.
The new specification includes two units that are externally set; one as an exam, the other as a controlled assessment. These two externally marked units equate to 44% of the Foundation Diploma (falling to 33% when topped up to an Extended Diploma over two years). This course is limited to 20 places, so applicants must be talented footballers as well as being able to meet the grade entry requirements.
Typically, learners on this programme will have the exercise strand of the E6 Programme embedded into their timetable. E6 also provides opportunities for volunteering and work with the National Citizenship Service.
Our main aim is to help our players achieve the highest standard of football possible. Possible exit routes from our Portsmouth College Football Academy (PCFA) are; moving onto professional football clubs though our links within the game, moving onto a US Scholarship where you can play and learn at one of the universities linked to the Major League Soccer, or moving onto a degree course at a UK university to study a sport-related degree.
There are no exam dates associated currently with this course. Players on the programme will be expected to attend pre-season training in August.
