Course Description


This longer qualification is an introduction to the world of media and journalism. It would suit students interested in a career in digital media production, who are keen writers and have a strong interest in social media. The qualification can be combined with a main programme of A Levels and/or BTECs in any area of the curriculum.

Grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language is required.

As an international student you must:

  • Demonstrate a suitable level of academic English, normally at CEFR level B1. For Student Visa applications Portsmouth College recommends a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 overall (with no component lower than 5) to best succeed in your studies.
  • Demonstrate that you are competent to study at Level 3 in your chosen subjects during your application, including certificates of your qualifications and subject specific requirements, such as evidence of an art portfolio for entry on to one of our Art courses.
  • Successfully complete a Skype interview with the College to discuss and assess your subject choices.

You will begin by learning how media institutions operate to create media products that will appeal to target audiences. You will also study journalism processes and get creative in producing your own print-based or audio-visual product. You will study the following units:

  • Pre-production and planning
  • Creating a Media Product
  • Social Media and Globalisation
  • Journalism and the News Industry
