Performance Excellence Through Education at Portsmouth College
Updates
Cabaret - December 2011
As term came to a close Portsmouth College’s Performing Arts department produced a sparkling rendition of the musical classic, Cabaret.
The show was a success all week with sold out shows and even more people than seats on the Friday night’s finale. And from the performance given night after night it is not hard to see why. Possessing a ferocious high kick, Megan Blower, who plays the enigmatic Sally Bowles, gave a sterling and poised performance, revealing the tragedy behind the cabaret. Dealing with difficult subject matter can mean treading the line between entertainment and the sinister. This delicate balance lies in the casts interpretation of their roles and their ability to exhibit the subtexts in their performances. The success of the show was down to the casts ability to skillfully produce comedy and yet convey the seriousness of the historical reference within the play. The more comic moments came with a sense of fun and enthusiasm, while the more tragic elements were delivered with delicacy and sensitivity worthy of their gravity. All in all a successful performance which delighted and entertained the audience, while provoking thought on a historically poignant moment.
