Performing Arts & Music.Performance Excellence Through Education at Portsmouth College
Portsmouth College is a Performing Arts Academy. This means that, in addition to our full performance-based curriculum of Drama, Dance, Music Technology, Music Performance and Performing Arts, we also offer a fantastic enrichment programme. And it’s open to everyone. Portsmouth College literally buzzes with performance opportunities. There is something going on nearly every week – from a Canteen Session, where music students perform a lunchtime gig, to a theatre trip or rehearsal for a show. Each year we put on a college-wide musical. We had a sold out run of Chicago in 2009 and of Moulin Rouge in 2010. Our most recent production in December 2010 was Cabaret. You can get involved by acting, singing, dancing, running the box office for the shows, stage-managing the performances or being the sound technician. No experience is necessary, just lots of energy, enthusiasm and commitment - and a bit of talent helps too! We are now well established participants in the national Rock Challenge competition and each year our teams have done better and better. College teams have claimed the ‘Spirit of Rock Challenge’ award in each of that we have competed. This is a reflection of the exceptional involvement our students have in Rock Challenge (students lead, choreograph and stage our performances) and is something we’re very proud of. In 2010 we were the highest scoring runner up in the Portsmouth heats and secured fourth place at the Southern Grand Final. Join us and be part of a great team. Music performance at Portsmouth College continues to go from strength to strength. In December 2010 our students performed a sell out gig at the Eastney Tavern in Southsea. It was a fantastic night and a brilliant showcase for the talents of our students. This was followed by a Christmas show in our studio theatre which will now become a regular feature of the performance calendar There’s plenty of other ways to get involved in performance activities. We organise one-to-one singing lessons, or you could opt to learn piano, drums or guitar. We also have a college band, made up of like minded Music Technology students, but there’s always room for another one and we facilitate band practise in the college. We have a fully functioning recording studio and student technicians who are happy to work with you if you want to record a CD. For dancers, recent events have included the Red Cross ‘Dance for Life’ competition, the Southern Street Dance-off and The National Dance Challenge competition (where we came 2nd and will be performing at the Grand Final in London in July 2011). We have runworkshops in tabla playing and Bharat Nattayam dance. There’s a real buzz about performance at Portsmouth College, with countless different ways to get involved - and you don’t have to be a drama king a dancing queen or an X factor wannabe to take part!
