Portsmouth College is a performing arts academy. This means that, In addition to our full performance-based curriculum, involving drama, dance, music and musical theatre, we also offer a fantastic enrichment programme. And it’s open to all students.
Each year we put on a college-wide musical. We had a sold out run of Cabaret in 2011 and West Side Story in 2012.
You can get involved by acting, singing, dancing, running the box office for the shows, or stage-managing the performances. No experience is necessary, just lots of energy, enthusiasm and commitment – and a bit of talent helps too!
There’s a real buzz about performance at Portsmouth College, with countless different ways to get involved – and you don’t have to be a drama king or dancing queen to take part!
We are now well established participants in the national Rock Challenge competition and each year our teams have done better and better. College teams claimed the ‘Spirit of Rock Challenge’ award for four consecutive years. This is a reflection of the exceptional involvement our students have in Rock Challenge (students lead, choreograph and stage our performances) and is something we’re very proud of. Join us and be part of a great team. Other events for dancers include: the Red Cross ‘Dance for Life’ competition, the Southern Street Dance-off, performances at the Southampton Mela and workshops in tabla playing and Bharat Nattayam dance.

If singing is your thing or you’re in a band there are fantastic opportunities to perform live; in regular sessions at College but also at Portsmouth venues the Cellars and the Wedgewood Rooms. The ‘Recording Club’ is a great chance to get sound recording experience in our music studio (you don’t need to be on a music course). We also organise one-to-one singing lessons, or you could opt to learn piano, drums or guitar.
