Helping you find your ‘best-fit’ in the world of work

To succeed in your early working life (whether via university or straight from College) you will need to develop your understanding of the jobs market, your employability skills and the personal qualities to give you an edge in a hugely competitive environment.

Our Employability and Enterprise provision which will allow you to develop, through a variety of initiatives, the skills and attributes you will need in order to build a successful career.  Our flexible timetable allows all students to work on their E&E skills alongside their AS/A Level, BTEC and GCSE courses.

The full programme includes:

Employability coaching sessions.
We will help you construct a strong CV, search effectively for a part/full time job, develop your interview skills.

Job / work experience / volunteering / shadowing
Portsmouth College has a long standing and well established partnership with the local community and we will be able to facilitate a wide range of opportunities for your to enrich your CV and/or UCAS application.

Valuable workshops will be provided throughout your time at college, examples include: ‘networking skills’, ‘the hidden job market’, ‘effective use of social media’ etc. These will provide you with an understanding of current trends and issues which will affect your future professional and social development.

Visiting speakers from the education and business sector are invited to speak on a variety of topics: find out about midwifery, law, engineering, creative design or the successful journey of a local entrepreneur etc.

Fairs and events
Career fairs, progression events, job fairs, apprenticeship fairs, speed networking events… to name just a few.  For example, in 2013/14 we will hold two Enterprise Days, two Preparation for Employment Days and one Creative Industries Day.

Up-to-date Information
Our extensive careers and employability intranet provides you with up-to-date resources, current vacancies on our ‘Jobs and Apprenticeship Board’ and information on local and national events, helping you make an informed decision about your future.

Social Enterprise Project
The College has a close partnership with the Beneficial Foundation, a social enterprise which provides learning, personal development and employability opportunities for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.  Our own students will be able to take up regular work experience slots in a variety of departments at the Beneficial’s main site in Fratton.

Enterprise Society
Portsmouth College will help you build strong creative and enterprising skills. Our student led Enterprise Society, ‘Inspire’, is providing opportunities for students interested in self-employment, small business development and entrepreneurship.  From 2013/14 we are planning to work in partnership with the Portsmouth University Enterprise Society.

Young Enterprise
Want to run your own business in the future?  Well, why not try it out now?  Portsmouth College, in partnership with Young Enterprise, offers you the opportunity to run a real business or social enterprise with the support of business advisers.

University Partnerships
We have strong links with local universities. Events are organised regularly and are highly valued by students and parents: HE Education Fair (with 100+ universities) held at Portsmouth University, Portsmouth College HE Fair, HE Finance evenings, UCAS and finance application clinics, University Conferences, etc.

Activities and Competitions
Develop your employability skills through a variety of exciting and occasionally exclusive opportunities, for example: a Mock Assessment Centre at IBM, £10 Challenge, individual enterprise projects.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award and National Citizens Service.
For some students it will be possible to work on these exciting national awards and count them towards your ‘employability passport’.

You will have the opportunity to gain qualifications valued by employers such as:

Your ‘Employability Passport’

We believe that your work on ‘employability’ is a crucial part of your overall qualification.  Therefore, we have developed a system of certification known as your Employability Passport.  This is a record of all of your employability activity in each year at College which is supported by some of the most prominent employers’ organisations and universities in the local area.

Your employability passport can be achieved at three different levels:


  • Minimum attendance of 90%
  • Complete a CV
  • Successfully complete two qualifying E&E activities in College
  • Complete a level 1 U-Explore portfolio


  • Minimum attendance of 90%
  • Complete a CV
  • Successfully complete three qualifying E&E activities in College
  • Take part in a set amount of volunteering/work experience
  • Complete a level 2 U-Explore portfolio


  • Minimum attendance of 90%
  • Complete a CV
  • Successfully complete four qualifying E&E activities in College
  • On-going volunteering/work experience
  • Complete a level 3 U-Explore portfolio
  • Contribute to College life (NACUE, Student Union, Peer Mentor Programme, Go For It Project, etc.)
  • Successfully complete an additional qualification (ILM/ 1st Aid/ DoE etc.)

Recording your E&E activities – U-Explore

The College has invested in a fantastic on-line careers research and recording programme called U-Explore.  This offers you a huge range of opportunities to discover more about careers options, training, qualifications and what real jobs involve.  You can also record a strong portfolio of your own employment and employability activities, and build this up over time.
